Eclipse 2012- Redding, CA

I forgot to buy a pair of those spiffy viewing glasses, so we viewed the eclipse the old fashion way- through shadows. If you crossed your fingers together, you could see the crescent forming.

Daphne at 2 years old. We used it as a fun little science lesson. She got to watch a lot of NASA videos online before the eclipse started.

Strawberries A+... Carrots F-

The strawberries are finally getting ripe.

We've been munching on them all week. Yum!

Our carrots are another story.... Super tall leaves and one giant stump of a carrot. What gives? Anyone know what the problem might be? I'm wondering if it was my irregular watering in the early spring, or if it's not getting a deep enough water so that the carrot doesn't want to continue? Or maybe the weather is too hot now? I'm pretty sure there are no rocks stopping them since these were planted in my raised beds.

Shasta Caverns

My hubs and daughter took me to Shasta Caverns for Mother's Day. I've been wanting to go forever, and today moms got in free! Being the cheapskate that I am, I had to take advantage. The trip started off with a leisurely boat ride across Shasta Lake.

Next, a bus took us up the mountain.

Then we had to climb up a bazillion stairs to the entrance. A good workout for a prego such as myself.

Finally going down into the cave. A delightful 70 degrees inside.

Cool cool cool.

The tour inside probably lasted an hour.

This girl loved it. Her favorite part was probably all the stairs she got to climb!

From this picture you can kind of see... but the place was really big.

Back down the mountain.

And a free carnation and professional photo was given to all the moms.

Such a good experience. Do it next year if you're a mom!

Herbs in the Burbs

My herbs are finally getting big enough to eat. I started all of them from seed a few months ago. Dill. Daphne likes to eat it plain. I planted a few of them by my cucumbers, a good companion plant, or so I've read.

I planted the basil around its companion, the tomato plant. These little guys took a beating from the slugs a few weeks ago, but they're bouncing back.

We planted a lot of cilantro. I make a lot of Mexican food. But I also like to eat it in salads and on omelets. Yum.

Peas Please

Snap peas are in!

Hops have grown super tall over the last month.

Collard greens are finally filling out, along with the full bed of lettuce, beets, and spinach.

Added some stepping stones and rock borders in the hopes that it will keep little feet out of the new beds. It seems to be working.

And some start-up shots for me to look back on in a month or two...
